The I use oil paint for all my projects. Lets find out why.

Oil paint and acrylic paint are two popular mediums used in painting. While acrylic paint is known for its quick-drying properties, oil paint has been a favourite of artists for centuries. It is believed that oil paint dates back thousands of years to the early Greek and Egyptian period, but it became more widely used during the Renaissance period.

In this article, we will discuss the benefits of using oil paint over acrylic paint, which will be useful for artists who are looking to explore different mediums.

Mixability

One of the most significant advantages that oil paint has over acrylic is its mixability. Since oil paint takes a long time to dry, artists have more time to blend colours together to create a smooth transition between colors. This makes oil paint ideal for creating subtle effects, such as gradients. In contrast, acrylic paint dries quickly, which means that artists have to work quickly to blend colours together before they dry.

Versatility

Oil paint is also known for its versatility. Oil paint can be applied with different techniques to create a wide range of effects. It can be applied thickly or thinly, with a brush or a palette knife, or even with one's fingers. Therefore, artists have more flexibility when it comes to creating artworks with oil paint. Acrylic paint, on the other hand, dries quickly, which means that artists have to work faster to create these different effects.

Durability

Oil paint is also considered to be more durable than acrylic paint. Once the oil paint has dried, it creates a hard and durable surface that is resistant to cracking, fading, and damage. This is why many museums and galleries prefer to display artworks that are painted with oil paint. Acrylic paint, on the other hand, can be fragile and prone to cracking over time.

Colour Depth

Another advantage of oil paint is that it has a much richer and deeper colour depth than acrylic paint. This is because oil paint allows the artist to layer the paint, creating a sense of depth and richness to the colour. Acrylic paint, on the other hand, has a flatter, more one-dimensional appearance.

Slow Drying

Oil paint dries slowly, and this is both an advantage and a disadvantage. One advantage is that artists have more time to work on larger paintings without the paint drying out. This means that they have more time to refine their artwork, which allows them to create more complex and detailed artworks. The disadvantage is that the drying process can take a long time, which can be inconvenient for artists who need to complete their artwork quickly. This however can be controlled and genuinely eliminated by adding fast drying mediums to the oil colour as you apply the paint on to the canvas.

Blending

Due to its slow drying time, oil paint is much easier to blend compared to acrylic paint which dries quickly. Artists have more time to blend colours and create intricate details, which is particularly useful when creating realistic portraits and landscapes.

Retouching and Correcting Mistakes

Oil paint allows artists to retouch and correct their mistakes even after the paint has dried. This is because oil paint is more forgiving than acrylic paint. Acrylic paint dries quickly, which means that mistakes cannot be easily corrected without the risk of ruining the entire painting.

Changing Colour

Oil paint simply dries without changing it’s tonal value, hue or saturation. In other words it wont change colour as it dries. Where as Acrylic paint dries several values darker. Which means you have to guess the colour as you try to match an existing dry colour on your painting. With oil paint you can easily match each colour to the existing dry colour on your canvas. This makes the painting process so much easier for the artist using oil colours.

Conclusion

In conclusion, oil paint has several benefits over acrylic paint, making it a preferred medium among artists. Oil paint’s mixability, versatility, colour depth, durability, slow drying time, blending qualities, and the ability to retouch mistakes make it a popular choice for creating detailed and complex artworks. However, it does have some setbacks, like the prolonged drying time and the need for the use of solvents. Meanwhile, acrylic paint still has its advantages due to its water-soluble and fast-drying properties, making it a versatile medium as well. Ultimately, it depends on the artist's preference, style, and medium objectives.
