Course Description

Drawing is essential to be an accurate painter, and these classes will teach you how to draw in a representational style (as it looks in life). Using proven methods that were employed by the old master artists of the Renaissance, you will learn various graphite and charcoal application techniques to develop a high level of draftsmanship.

What you will learn

  • How to analyse and create the steps to create accurate drawings

  • The importance of learning how to see, to draw representationally

  • How to get proportional accuracy, shape, true values and mass

  • Complete a series of Barque drawing studies (2D study reference)

  • Progress onto chiaroscuro techniques from simple classical plaster casts and still life (3D study reference)

  • Experience sight-sized studies to cultivate a general competency for realistic drawing.

  • Five days drawing from life with portrait models

Student Testimonials

I’ve completed the drawing course and can honestly say that I am so grateful to have found this school. The tuition is inspiring, supportive, and I never imagined I would progress this far. You require patience, but I now understand why learning to draw is the key to learning to paint.
— Wendy Bradley
I wanted to learn to draw ‘properly’. I wanted to be able to progress and paint portraits in oils. I’m still very much a beginner, however, have accomplished my first personal portrait project in oils. It is truly amazing how my ability and confidence has grown. If you want to learn portraiture, go to the Classical Art Academy. It is a caring and nurturing family of artists and students
— Luke Frater
